The inscription “LIBERTY” appears above and behind Lady Liberty’s head, and “IN GOD WE TRUST” is along the bottom edge of the coin. This was a monumental decision for the coin, and has made it valuable among collectors. On this coin, Lady Liberty is depicted as an African American woman - the first time the personification of America had ever been depicted as an African American. It depicts a profile of a left-facing Lady Liberty wearing a crown of stars. The obverse of the 2017 (and 2018) American Liberty Coin is Justin Kunz. It has an uncirculated proof finish, and each coin is packaged in a protective capsule to ensure it’s not exposed to fingerprints, dirt, and oil. The background is very reflective, and the foreground is matte - which provides excellent contrast and beauty. This design on all editions of these coins is extremely high relief, so the foreground and background are especially distinctive. However, they are still regarded as highly collectible and are some of the most-collected coins today. These designs were intended to capture the current America, which caused some controversy within the numismatist and bullion community when these coins were released. Both of these designs also feature a variation of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a bald eagle on the reverse. Since then, two more designs have been created and minted - in 20. Nearly 50,000 coins were minted that first year. The first version from 2015 featured Lady Liberty holding a torch on the obverse and a bald eagle with an olive branch in its talons on the reverse. This coin was first minted in 2015, and has had a new design every other year.
